Tainted beef update and other recalls

Warnings: Keeping our families safe

*Additional recalls of public interest - gravy mixes, shoes, protein drinks, fish

*USDA List of stores receiving E-Coli tainted beef from JBS Swift

*Concerns about Tylenol and ADHA and ADD medications for attention deficit
. Lantus for diabetics and painkillers Darvon and Darvocet.

There are two web sites you should check regularly – the FDA/USDA/FSIS for meats, eggs, poultry; http://www.fsis.usda.gov/FSIS_RECALLS/Open_Federal_Cases/index.asp   and FDA Med Watch for recalled medications. http://www.fda.gov/Safety/MedWatch/default.htm

Currently MedWatch is taking a look at overuse of Tylenol.   They are also concerned about stimulant medications for children taking ADD, ADHD, and other attention disorders. This study indicates that 564 healthy children may have died from taking any of these medications listed here. However, they do not recommend at this time you take your child off the medication until further studies – but suggest that you talk this over once again with their doctor. They strongly suggest that if your child complains of chest pains or has fainting or other serious symptoms that you take them to the ER immediately. http://www.webmd.com/add-adhd/news/20090615/adhd-drugs-sudden-death-risk-higher

They are also taking a look at Lantus – insulin – for diabetics and a possible link to cancer. http://www.fda.gov/Safety/MedWatch/SafetyInformation/SafetyAlertsforHumanMedicalProducts/ucm170089.htm

There is concern for Darvon, Darvocet and other pain medication containing  propoxyphene - press release 07/07/07   http://www.fda.gov/NewsEvents/Newsroom/PressAnnouncements/ucm170769.htm

Beef Recall:

For more information about the original recall on beef from JBS Beef go to Atlanta Faith and Family sites below:  Update with stores listed below in this article.

While a complete list may not yet be available, this one was listed today as stores who received and sold this beef tainted with E-coli. Look in your freezer to see if you purchased any beef products from any of these establishments with a date of April 21, 2009. Take these products back to the store for a refund. If the beef is still in the original boxes it will carry this code EST 969 – 042109 and the time stamp will be 0618 – 1130.

However, this was meat packaged as whole primal cuts and may have been redistributed in other forms by retailers. ASK at the meat counter if your store received any of the contaminated beef and if so, ask how it was handled. If they say YES, you need to check your freezer. Only the Good Lord knows if any of this meat was processed into baby food, beef pot pies, or beef soups. The key to safety is “cook until done.”

This beef from JBS Swift Company (now a Brazilian company) was recalled as a result of reported illnesses caused by the E-coli 0157: H7 bacterium. It has been reported that as many a 27 people were hospitalized and two with kidney failure which is the worse outcome of this bacteria with possible cause of death.   This bacteria can be deadly especially to the very young, elderly, and those with compromised immune systems.

Little did the public know but there have been many recalls of beef for this same reason all year long; and from a variety of meat houses.

Even if your beef is not on the recall list, all advice is still prevalent – cook meat thoroughly to 160 degrees in the center– and wash all utensils, cutting boards or dishes – sinks or any area coming into contact with any raw meat product. Be sure to wash your hands both before and after handling.   Opening the fridge with unwashed hands after handling raw meat can leave the bacteria on the handle and the next unsuspecting child can open the fridge and later but their hands in their mouth and quite possibly become ill.

The CDC recommends continual hand washing through out the day (especially after using the toilet) not only to prevent E-coli and other bacterium; but also the spread of cold and flu viruses. Be particularly aware of touching fixtures and doorknobs in public restrooms. Use a paper towel to open doors and to turn off faucets.  It is a good idea to always carry tissues in your purse or pocket. Report unsanitary conditions and lack of supplies to management in public places. Men used to always carry a clean handkerchief; that does not seem to be the norm today.

It is also a good idea to carry no water hand disinfecting cleaners when no facility for hand washing is available. Be particularly careful of children’s hands after attending a petting zoo. The CDC also suggests that all hot dogs be boiled for at least five minutes even if you also cook them on the grill. These types of cold cuts and sausages can contain Listeria - another nasty that hides in meats. Many times what we think might be stomach flu may actually be bacteria caused illnesses.

Listed below are other recalls which may be suspect of Salmonella poisoning for C. F. Sauer Company and others.

We can only hope that any serious recalls come to our attention before it makes us sick or kills - but someone has to be first to call the attention to the government agencies.  Make sure that it is not you.

Also listed below is a shoe recall from Nordstrom – shoes made in China – heels fall off.

The following list came from the stores themselves warning their customers they had received and sold the beef products. Below that list is information, finally, from the USDA – however even this list may not be complete. I list the stores from Georgia and give you a web site where you can go for a 124 page listing by state to see if you have been affected. This meat was sold in practically every state in the union and even internationally.

Be aware, be safe, be prepared. It is a full time job these days keeping our families healthy and this could also save a lot of trips to the doctor. It is also the duty of parents to keep their children spiritually healthy. Just as there is physical food for the body, there is spiritual food for the soul. “Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.” Colossians 4:2
