Synonyms for ecumenical are worldwide and universal. The historic origin of ecumenical, however, refer to belonging to and being accepted by the Christian Church throughout the world. Beginning with the Nicaea Council of 325 AD and 20 later, councils were called by the Roman Catholic Church to decide what is accepted as Christian faith. Those doctrines hammered out by the Council that the pope ratifies there after are binding.
The first council was the model for the rest. Councils One to Eight were to determine whether specific doctrines were orthodox or heretical. Other councils also concerned church discipline and morals.
Look up ecumenical and you will find details such as that the 19th Canon of 1571 asserted: "let preachers take care that they never teach anything...except what is agreeable to the doctrine of the Old and New Testament, and what the Catholic Fathers and ancient Bishops have collected from the same doctrine."
The chief purpose of the Council of Constance was to heal the Great Schism between east and west Catholics. Later the Council of Trent was convened to deal with the Protestant reformation. Most recently Pope John XXIII established the Second Vatican Council to reunite all Christians with the Church of Rome.
What is clear is that Trinitarian churches are not welcome, such as Unitarians, Latter Day Saints, Jehovah’s Witnesses—any religious bodies that lay claim they have divine authority to lead their churches other than that which is approved by the ecumenical councils.
