Social City brings Playdom to the city building game scene

Facebook games that allow players to build their own unique city are all the rage lately, with games such as MyTown and NanoTowns rising up the charts fast. These games all enable players to construct a town however they'd like it to be, and then have a variety of different options and levels of complexity on top of it.

Social City is a brand new game released today developed by Playdom, creators of Tiki Farm and Sorority Life. Social City starts out with a small city, which players can expand by purchasing new buildings, entertainment, and landscapes. A brief tutorial walks new players through the experience of keeping their visitors happy by building some leisure activities, placing objects, and assigning a job to a factory.

Social City is unique (and more complex) in that players have to manage the happiness of their city's residents, plus continue to assign jobs to factories to bring in a good income. The overall city has a level so that players can continue making their city better. Cities can be expanded by purchasing city expansions, and there are achievements that players can earn.  Aspiring city designers can create roads that run through their city and decorate with trees and different flowers to set their city apart from others.  There is plenty to do in Social City, even for a brand new game.

What truly sets Social City apart from other games is the level of quality put into the game.  The art and graphics are crisp and nice looking.  The interfaces are intuitive.  The entire game performs great, with snappy interactions and little to no lag whatsoever.  With other top Facebook games behind them, Playdom are poised to take over the city gaming space quickly with the ability to cross-promote Social City from their other games.

There is plenty that could be done to improve Social City (such as allowing rotation of objects and buildings), but for a brand new game that just released - Social City is a great contender.  It is fun, looks great, feels excellent, and seems to have all of the necessary hooks to spread quickly.

I think that Social City is a solid game, but I really find the art, humour and gameplay of NanoTowns to be different. It doesn't try to be serious like the other city games, but is quirky and fun.

I just played social city for the first time today and I think it is brilliant. I would love to know if you can buy the game or is it just on Facebook.
