Facebook games 101: How to play games on Facebook

So you've heard that playing games on Facebook is the new thing, and you keep hearing everyone talk about Farmville this, Petville that.  If you're looking to learn how to play games on Facebook, look no further!  Here is your complete guide to getting started with playing games on Facebook.

Sign up for Facebook:

This is the easy part!  Go to the Facebook website and register an account, using either your real identity or a fake one.  You will have to use a real email address in order to confirm your account.  Once you have registered, you'll be asked to fill out a profile and upload a photo to represent yourself.  Feel free to skip any of these steps, however, if you plan to use your account just for Facebook gaming and you plan to make friends - you may want to include some personal information so that you don't look like a spam account.

Now that you have an account, it's time to get started!

Check out the Games Dashboard:

In a recent update, Facebook has added a handy games dashboard that lists games that your friends are playing, games that are popular on Facebook, sponsored games, and anything else that you might want to know about gaming.  The Facebook Games Dashboard can be accessed on the left side of your screen by clicking on the "Games" link in the left sidebar.

Here you may want to browse the games dashboard to see what other people are playing.  Once you have started playing a game, you can also use the dashboard to stay updated in current games.

Bookmark games you enjoy:

Almost every Facebook game you play will encourage you to bookmark it, and this is a good idea.  Bookmarking does not mean you will get a bookmark in your internet browser, it means that you'll have the application as a Facebook bookmark. These bookmarks are stored on the left sidebar of your screen at all times.  You may have to expand this list by clicking "more" if you have many bookmarks.  Bookmarks allow you to quickly get back to the games you like to play.

Searching for games on Facebook:

Searching for games is the quickest way to find games of a certain theme.  There is a handy search box on the top of every page on Facebook, and you can enter search terms in there.  For example, if you're looking for island-themed games, you can search for "island" in the top bar.  You'll then be given a sortable list of search results for that term. It may be necessary to click on "applications" on the left sidebar after you have searched in order to display only games instead of people, status updates, and fan groups.  You can also search for games by their title, for example, typing "Island Life" into the search bar.

Adding neighbors on Facebook:

One confusing bit for new Facebook players is the "neighbor" concept.  Many Facebook games require you to add neighbors as a way of inviting friends.  When you play a game for the first time, you may be encouraged to add neighbors.  You cannot add people as neighbors unless they are your Facebook friend.  This means that you will have to add people as friends first.  People who are already your friends will not show up automatically as neighbors in most apps, so you may have to invite them separately.

System requirements for Facebook games:

The system requirements for most Facebook games is pretty low.  Most games will require you to install Flash, but generally are not resource intensive.  Some Facebook games can even be run on a mobile device!

So there you have it!  This guide should get anyone started on playing Facebook games.
