Eating disorders are rising rapidly for children in the United States, according to new information released by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Data shows that the number of children under the age of 12 who were hospitalized for eating disorders rose by an astounding 119% between 1999 and 2006.
Although many people are under the mistaken impression that Anorexia and Bulimia are the only eating disorders, the actual number one eating disorder in the United States is Binge Eating Disorder. Anorexia and Bulimia have long been associated with teenage girls, but data is now showing that men make up about 10% of those suffering from eating disorders.
The fact that younger children are now contracting eating disorders is a wake up call for health professionals. According to WebMD, doctors are now being urged to look for other signs of eating disorders in young children other than traditional measurements of height and weight. Other symptoms that doctors look for include: dehydration, hair loss, dry skin, fatigue, and skin pallor.
Health experts warn that eating disorders are deadly mental health conditions and urge parents and others to contact a physician if they believe a child is suffering from an eating disorder. The conditions are treatable, but treatment cannot begin unless someone makes contact with a medical health professional.
