Most young kids dream about becoming a professional football or baseball player for their favorite team. For Kip Mortensen, his dream is the opposite. He is one of the young elite who dream of becoming a professional skateboarder. Residing from Westminster, Colorado, Kip has been fascinated with the idea of skateboarding since he was in elementary school.
“My earliest memory of skateboarding probably came when I was in either 5th or 6th grade. My sister took me to a friend's house and I saw some kids out front skateboarding on the streets and rails,” said Kip on his first memories of his beloved sport. For Mortensen, life was skateboarding. He finds his days filled with searching for new hits or gaps to try; or maybe even working on his favorite tricks such as the Frontside Big Spin or Backside Smith Grind.
Most young skaters today would spend their time honing in on a particular style of skateboarding that they would feel most comfortable in; Kip does not have that problem.
“I prefer to skate on the streets, simple as that. When you skate street everything is always new. Also no terrain you find is perfect, which really gives you the unique challenge to stick that trick,” Says Mortensen.
My first skate sessions with Kip included him with the rest of his skateboarding team constantly traveling from location to location looking for new terrain for them to hit up. This included random stair sets, local schools, as well as popular skate parks in the area.
Since the inception of skateboarding 50 years ago skaters would often be divided into two main categories: Those who skateboard in competitions and those who prefer to skateboard for video footage. Kip finds himself taking a bit from both worlds.. “As long as skateboarding is involved I love it. Doesn't matter if it is filming for the lastest video, or competing in a contest. I just love to skate,” say Mortensen.
Today Kip finds himself skating for the Diabolical skateboarding team in Englewood, Colorado. When asked on his plans for the next five years of his skating career, Kip's answer was simple. “I plan on going with the flow of the sport, achieving every possible trick that is out there.”
