If you aren't in Minden this June, kicking off summer at the Centennial Carson Valley Days festival, you may find yourself wondering where everyone else is. What started 100 years ago as an excuse for some of the local farmers to get out of the fields for a day, enjoy a bit of dance and barbecue, is now an earth shaking, four day event featuring a carnival, parade, fireworks, live music, and tons of activities for the entire family.
Wednesday is dedicated to children with special needs. Parenting any child is an intense and exhausting experience, so the organization really tries to step in for the afternoon, taking children on rides and lending a hand, letting the parents relax and just enjoy the experience of watching their kids have fun for a change.
Things really get going on the 12th, kicked off with a balloon launch at 7am, along side a 10k and 5k run, followed by the annual parade at 9am. There will also be a golf tournament, live music, craft shows, and plenty of other events. You can view the full schedule here.
The festival is hosted by Carson Valley 20/30 club. The local chapter is committed to helping Carson Valley youths, particularly struggling families and children with special needs. "Our purpose is really captured in the motto," says Bryan Deaton, "A man never stands so tall as when he kneels to help a child." The Carson Valley 20/30 club gave out $22,000 in grants and donations to support youth, building a new playground built for special needs children, providing secret santa gifts and jackets to struggling families.
