Every year, the world-famous "Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence" put on their annual Easter Sunday celebration in Dolores Park. It's a politically incorrect cavalcade of drag queens, public nudity and hunky Jesus lookalikes. For a while I've known about this and have always avoided the thing for fear I might turn into a pillar of salt for having witnessed the event (Catholic guilt).
Yesterday, I finally gave in to my curiosity and decided to check out the action for the first time. It was, as usual, San Francisco's idea of what conventional wisdom would look like if it were turned on its head.
Sister Roma and her crew were there entertaining the crowd with enough witty banter to fill a football field, there was live music, people in bunny costumes, picnicking families, drunk hipsters, dancing homeless people, elected officials making proclamations, Frank Chu...just your run of the mill San Francisco scene with enough fodder for The Fox News Network to have a field day with.
No, I didn't turn into a pillar of salt but I did get a greater appreciation for how fortunate I am to live in a place where irreverence is not only encouraged, it's given a city permit to display itself.
Now those guys on Vermont Street with their tricycles, someone lock those Bozos up!!
