Comfortable four passenger seating in a two door automobile is not a phrase you hear very often -- especially as it relates to sports cars, exotic cars, or supercars. The Ferrari 612 Scaglietti may be one exception, although it's a given that back seat passengers are probably going to need to be small in stature if they want to play "back seat driver" on the track or highway in this smart touring automobile.

 FERRARI BUILT FOR TOURING

The Ferrari 612 seen in the picture to the left is a supercar, undoubtedly. Technically, the industry standard term for a car such as this would be a "Supercar 2+2", meaning in layman's terms that it is essentially a two door, two seater coupe with two extra seats placed in the back to accommodate the occasional rear seat passenger.

HISTORY OF THE "2 + 2" FERRARI MODELS

As you can see by the image, the car itself is flawless in its overall appearance and design.

The 612 model is a progressive continuation of Ferrari's 2 + 2 line. It is a V-12 , 540 horsepower, grand touring car of the most elite sort.

The Ferrari 2 + 2 line began with the 250 GT 2+2 in the early 1960s. The model progressed to become the 330 GT in the mid to late 60s. The concept evolved into the the 365 GT from the late 60s to early 70s, followed by the 400 of the mid to late 1970s.

Having a high performance sports car that  had a useful back seat was always a feature folks looking for a daily driver thought was cool, and the Ferrari 2+2 models sold well in their targeted niche market.

The 400i was released in the late 1970s to mid 1980s. After, the company followed up by producing the 412 from the mid-80s up until 1989.

The 456 was produced from the early 1990s until the late 90s.  The 456 M from the late 1990s until 2003 took the earlier car model's place successfully.

The 612 came out as a 2004 model and is in current production.

THE 2009 FERRARI 612: FYI, PERKS, FEATURES, SPECS, PRICE, AND BENEFITS

FYI

The car model shown in the pic slideshow here is a 2009 612 Ferrari model.

The 612 is referred to as the "Scaglietti" (essentially phonetically pronounced Ss - kal - Yet - E). The Scaglietti is named after the famous coach builder Sergio Scaglietti, a person Enzo Ferrari trusted enough to allow to repair crashed race cars.

Enzo Ferrari brought Sergio Scaglietti to his design stable team in 1954 as the first sanctioned coach builder to be allowed to work on a Ferrari chassis straight from the factory.

A little known fact about the 612 Scaglietti is that the badging is not equal on each side. On the driver's side the badge says, "612". On the passenger's side it says, "Scaglietti".

PERKS

The biggest perk of owning the 2009 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti is, obviously, that the car has a wider back seat than normal. These cars are ideal for a professional couple to own who want to be able to bring two small children on highway road rally adventures with them -- or for two couples who wish to share the thrill of riding together in the Ferrari on the way out to dinner. Under these sorts of circumstances, it is always advised to allow the largest passenger and driver to ride in the front of the vehicle, while those with a slighter build ride in the back seat [as limited knee room makes back seat riders uncomfortable on journey distances that take more than 30 minutes to arrival time].

Other perks include pleasant cross country touring, the ability to arrive in style on a short overnight road trip journey, and a phenomenal driving for pleasure opportunity. The 612 engines are famous for responding well to highway conditions, with engines performing better when stressed by cross country miles. Like a race horse needing to stretch it's legs on long runs as much as they need to run a healthy and quick quarter mile, the Scaglietti models are favorite touring runner cars for Ferrari commuters who like to roam.

SPECIAL FEATURES

The trunk of the 612 is in the back, as nearly all V-12 models are front engine versions. Placement of the V-12 in the front of a Ferrari model is the traditional Ferrari style, despite many errant claims that exotic cars must by definition have rear or centrally mounted engines that are widely accepted myths about exotic cars found on the Internet. [NOTE: The first mid-mounted V-12 was first produced by Ferrari in a special race car in  1963, as Enzo Ferrari preferred to adhere to tradition -- opting to gradually progress his sports racer gradually, while erring on the side of caution when it came to producing and reproducing proving racing machines before following trends in coach building. The first rear/mid mounted V-12 model offered for sale to the general public was in 1973 in the 365 Berlinetta Boxer. The company made other rear mounted cars, but they were badged as Dino models; typically, they were only 6 cylinder engines -- with the Dino being a 2.4 liter V6. The first rear mounted V-8 was the 308 GTB in 1974/1975-- and the rest is still making history.]

As a traveler thinking about the practicality of any commuting automobile, the Ferrari 612 Scaglietti not only offers the rear seat areas for a single person or traveling couple to pack, the company offers a 4 piece luggage pack option that is custom designed to fit in the trunk in the back. [Note: Many exotic car owners only pack the bare essentials in their car for overnight or weekend hotel stops and have their full luggage shipped by UPS or Federal Express to their travel destination to avoid cramped riding conditions or undue weight in the car that might hamper performance.]

SPECS ON THE 2009 FERRARI 612 SCAGLIETTI

In order to properly discuss the Ferrari 612, it's important to clear up a myth perpetuated inadvertently by well meaning fans of the exotic car business.

A popular misconception about the 612 series cars is that the supercar model shares the same engine and suspension technology as the 599. It doesn't.

The 599 has a more powerful 6 liter engine with 612 horsepower; the 612 has a belt driven 540 horsepower V-12 engine. The 599 also comes with Ferrari's state of the art Magnaflux suspension (that uses a special fluid and magnets to adjust the shock stiffness in order to make your car handle differently under a variety of conditions). [NOTE: On the steering wheel of most newer Ferrari models, you have a selector that gives you the choice of suspension for racing, rally sport, or touring -- essentially. The Magnaflux technology is a special feature of the 599, not yet available on other models (as of 2009).]

    Handsome car!
But, I have to say that side cove reminds me strongly of a '53 Studebaker.
