Job Search Help

We keep hearing all about the terrible employment statistics. And John Cook's TechFlash  relates the sobering news that Seattle is no longer in the top five investor cities.

And that is certainly cause for concern.  But the truth is, many companies are making strides towards success.  Getty Images is just one organization hiring locally.   Amazon.com hasn't stopped hiring top technical talent and Microsoft is surging forward with  games and all manner of mobile and mobile search opportunities.  And don't forget about the smaller companies like Gist and so many others.

My executive clients uncover job opportunities using their networks and two have found terrific non-profit opportunities.  Well, OK some jobs were not so hot because the salaries were under $100k but the candidate knew how to say no once it was clear the well was dry.

Bet you are thinking that was a mistake.  Some folks feel taking a lower salary is a good choice and that negotiating is risky.  Not true.  Good people cost  money and employers know this. That same candidate found two other opportunities at over $100k, so it is really a matter of common sense.  She is talking to the board on the job she really wants.

Take heart, don't listen to the media. I suspect many companies are working a lot smarter and growing conservatively.  I also know for a fact that many startup companies are waiting to achieve decent revenues before asking for money which will result in a higher valuation.  So don't believe it is all gloom and doom.  Joe Verschueren, Co-Founder of Formotus, for example, has started many successful ventures in the past and knows how to hire slowly.  But hire, he does. Remember, it only takes one job to get you back to work. Read my blog for links you can use to discover other jobs, other companies hiring.   And be sure to read about job search engines, a truly powerful tool for job search.

Here's a networking tip that is bound to result in keeping your own pipeline full. Next time you find out about a job in which you are not interested make a very serious attempt to find someone who is and introduce them.  They will return the favor and even if they don't you will feel great for having done such a good deed.
