Members of Congress spoof Shakespeare in annual 'Will on the Hill' charity event
National politicians, power brokers, and media pontificators perform Shakespeare, kind of, at the annual "Will on the Hill" charity event May 4.
At the esteemed Shakespeare Theatre Company, Members of Congress, lawyers, lobbyists, media personalities, and other Washington insiders will perform "A Midsession Night's Dream".
In this whimsical Washingtonian take on “A Midsummer’s Night Dream”, who is to be the ass-headed Bottom? That is the question.
U.S. Reps. Luis Gutierrez and Jane Harman in "Will on the Hill"
Guaranteed guffaws in Midsummer are “So quick bright things come to confusion”, and "My heart is true as steel", plus of course, “Lord, what fools these mortals be!”
“A Midsession Night's Dream" follows a young Senate page who falls asleep during a filibuster and is visited by the spirit of William Shakespeare. Together, like a modern-day Puck, that mischievous sprite, and Oberon, King of the Fairies, the two travel throughout the capitol and capital, using Shakespeare's imagination and the page's insider savvy to resolve conflicts, expose hypocrisy, and magically transform Washington into a Shakespearean utopia.
Seventeen U.S. Senators and Representatives, including Reps. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) and Jane Harman (D-CA), pictured at the top, plus about ten other Washington notables join the bipartisan frolic.
Is the recently revealed wiretapping of Rep. Harman by the National Security Agency (NSA) to be or not to be in the script by Peter Byrne?

Proceeds from "Will on the Hill", directed by David Muse, will benefit the Shakespeare Theatre Company's outreach programs including “Text Alive!” and “SHAKESPEARIENCE”, providing live theater free for DC area students.
"Will on the Hill" festivities begin at 6:30 P.M. with cocktails, followed by the performance at 7:30 P.M., and a buffet dinner following the show.
If all ends well, the Midsummer/Midsession audience will agree "This palpable-gross play hath well beguiled..."
