So I got a hysterical email sent to me the other day supposedly from Johns Hopkins University about how Sheryl Crow went on TV and said microwaving plastic caused dioxins that created her breast cancer.
And while the email is a fraud, the essence of the information in it is not. The FDA recommends microwaving food in ceramic or glass containers.
Even Saran wrap says do not touch your plastic wrap to your food when microwaving.
Johns Hopkins recommends the same. And they throw in a dig at Bisphenol A or BPA, a toxin found in plastics that can cause brain damage in children. (Parents do NOT use liquid baby formula or plastic bottles with the number "7" on them).
Johns Hopkins adds "metal items and many plastic containers are not safe to use in a microwave oven. For microwaving, use glass or plastic containers that are labeled “microwave safe.”
But you know what, I wouldn't even use a plastic container called "microwave safe." Why bother with the risk?
Also, did you ever notice that your food tastes like plastic after it's been wrapped in plastic for even a few days? It wouldn't be because the plastic leaching into the food would it?
But anyway...the real lesson here for me is, when emails come in BIG GIANT LETTERS, with HYSTERICAL TONES, be wary of the information, but once in a while it might actually make sense, even if the original sender is a LUNATIC.
So let's repeat the Wellness Guy's mantra - When in doubt, Nature Good, Man-made "improvements" bad. (Except for the exceptions).
