According to A.P. reports, Diprivan has been found in Michael Jackson’s home. So what exactly is Diprivan and what is it for? Diprivan (Propofol) is an anesthetic-hypnotic agent that is generally used to induce unconsciousness. It is given intravenously and is not appropriate for use at home by the general population. In the hands of a qualified healthcare provider it is a very effective and safe medication. It is very quick acting and can render an individual unconscious within 40 seconds (www.drugs.com). It should be used to sedate someone for procedures NOT as a hypnotic to go to sleep with. In the ICU it is used as a slow ongoing drip to keep a person relaxed and not fight life sustaining equipment such as a ventilator.
During MAC anesthesia (monitored anesthesia care) a slow steady low dose would be administered via an intravenous drip into a vein. This means it would be administered with ongoing IV fluids which is preferable over a bolus or quick one time intravenous injection. Even with a slow low dose administration attention must be given to the cardiovascular effects. It can cause hypotension (low blood pressure), apnea (no breathing), airway obstruction, oxygen desaturation (low oxygen levels in the blood) as well as other serious effects. This is why it is done in the presence of a medical team that includes an anesthesiologist. To inject oneself without this would be foolish indeed.
If you were already under the influence of narcotics such as Vicodin or Xanax it could potentiate the effects of the Diprivan. Any electrolyte imbalance from poor nutrition would also put you are a higher risk of abnormal heart rhythms. It would be a very poor pharmaceutical combination for the healthiest of individuals. For a highly emotionally and physically stressed 50 year old that is undertaking the rigors of daily intense workouts…it could…and did apparently become deadly.
Healthy Blessings,
Tracy Lynn
