This morning actress Demi Moore received a disturbing message from a woman threatening suicide. The message went out on twitter and twitter followers believed that the woman resided in San Jose. Concerned citizens called the San Jose Police Department and the woman was located and found unharmed ,but was hospitalized for a psychiatric evaluation.

Late last year a 19-year-old student committed suicide on the site Justin.tv.  Social media is a reflection of society and there will be individuals ,who in their distress, may use whatever forum is available to transmit their pain and confusion. Any media report may possibly increase the chances that there will be copycat attempts.  This is also often the fear in social environments ,such as on school campuses, when a student commits suicide.

The greatest risk is that the next person who believes that they will get help from either a celebrity or on a social networking site,  may not be as lucky. It would be difficult to always track the person down ,or know if it was a prank or a serious cry for help.

If you or anyone you know is thinking of suicide, contact the 24hour www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org/help/default.aspx.

This is their list is warning signs:

  • Threatening to hurt or kill oneself or talking about wanting to hurt or kill oneself
  • Looking for ways to kill oneself by seeking access to firearms, available pills, or other means
  • Talking or writing about death, dying, or suicide when these actions are out of the ordinary for the person
  • Feeling hopeless
  • Feeling rage or uncontrolled anger or seeking revenge
  • Acting reckless or engaging in risky activities - seemingly without thinking
  • Feeling trapped - like there's no way out
  • Increasing alcohol or drug use
  • Withdrawing from friends, family, and society
  • Feeling anxious, agitated, or unable to sleep or sleeping all the time
  • Experiencing dramatic mood changes
  • Seeing no reason for living or having no sense of purpose in life

Other indicators may be:

  • A history of suicide or depression in the family
  • History of depression
  • Sudden elevation in mood
  • Calls that have a grateful or goodbye theme
  • Attempts to give things away

It is important to seek help from a hotline or your local emergency room so that there will be an increased opportunity for an  immediate intervention.
