Because of tidal action in the Delta, and because many of the Delta’s 1000 miles of waterways were created by building levies of stone, beaches are few, and can disappear during periods of above mean high tides. But there are some, and they are worth seeking out, especially if you have young kids who like to play in the sand, and who are bored by boating. .jpg)
There are seven criteria that make a good beach for boaters. The first criterion is that the beach can be accessed only by boat -- and not by automobile -- which means fewer people, and sometimes none but you. The second criterion is soft clean sand. Besides nice sand, a good beach should have a gently sloping sand bottom, not mud, so young kids and toddlers have plenty of safe playing area. It should be sheltered from the wind. It should not have a rip current. It should have lots of sun, but also some shade so one can get out of the sun from time to time. Finally, it should have access to other activities, such as sightseeing, hiking, wake boarding, or tubing.
The first beach on the way into the Delta that meets those seven criteria is the eastern end of Montezuma Island, at Collinsville in Suisun County. It is across the water from Pittsburg, at the eastern entrance to Montezuma Slough. (38-04’28” N, 121-50’25” W)
Further up the Delta on the Sacramento is Decker Island, with a beach on the eastern side on Horseshoe Bend. The downstream entrance to Horseshoe Bend is at 38-05’ 02” N, 121-46’ 12” W.
On the San Joaquin system, there are some good beach areas in Little Franks Tract and Franks Tract in the Franks Tract State Recreation Area, northwest of Bethel Island.
I will post information about additional sand beaches in the future, including The Meadows. Keep checking.
There also are some private beaches at some of the Delta resorts, such as Snug Harbor, and a few have swimming pools, such as the Tower Park Marina. There is only one beach among the resorts that is reachable only by boat, Lost Isle. But Lost Isle is for adults only.
