Cheese Traders in South Burlington, VT is only in second place because it lacks the variety and size that Williston Liquidators boasts.  It is one of my favorite places to go-even when I don’t need anything in particular from there.  I must mention that although their prices are great, the biggest reason I enjoy shopping there is because the employees are wonderful.  They are always helpful and know what they are talking about.  So even though this store is second in my list for variety reasons, they are above par in their customer service and friendliness.

Cheese Traders on Williston Road also takes food stamps, and they have a variety of high quality foods for very reasonable prices.  They have crackers, cheeses (of course) from all around the world, prepared foods, organic varieties, cereals, toddler/baby food, bulk items from lentils to flour, a dairy cooler that sometimes contains the best prices on organic cream in town, and different types of soups.  They have novelty hot sauces, syrups and vinegars-and some of these are not the best prices for your budget, but they are still fun to peruse and sometimes buy.

Shopping at Cheese Traders is an enjoyable experience because even when your wallet is a little thin, you still can feel like a wealthy person.  I enjoy the culinary creativity that is inspired amidst such great ingredients.  Having always loved cooking my own creations from scratch, I find that the gourmet selections available for (mostly) low budget prices, it’s like shopping Nordstrom after they’ve swapped prices with Walmart.

Now, I have not mentioned one thing that Cheese Traders is best known for: the biggest wine selection in Chittenden County.  They have an amazing selection and even more amazing prices.  They have certain dessert wine selections upstairs, and about 100 times the variety downstairs.  Whatever your budget or occasion, you’re bound to find something there for you.

This week until Saturday, you will get even better deals than usual, because they are currently having their annual Garage Sale.   I got a box full of items, including a pint of organic heavy cream, stuffed olives, stuffed peppers, about 7 different types of cheese from all over the world, several boxes of crackers, 6 organic pie crusts, 6 boxes of all natural freezer pops,  2 all natural Tamarind Grill sauces, Injectible Cajun marinade, 2 things of marinated anchovies, and 2 bags of mini Snickerdoodle cookies (also organic).  The entire thing cost me $50 and some cents.

Cheese Traders also has an assortment of mostly natural beauty products.  They are members of Natural Food Purveyors which gets them deals on the great items they provide.  The goods they offer varies depending on the selection they are given from Natural Food Purveyors, and according to Charles Alexander, co-owner, they have to choose their selection based on price and whether or not people will want to buy it.  He says that they have started a shift over the last year into every day cooking, because people are eating out less.

This of course is good news for the customers.  The bulk section gives me a chance to buy organic whole grains, flour, cane sugar, beans and other items for a lot less than I would be paying elsewhere.  In a recent shopping excursion, I was able to buy cane sugar for .69 a pound.  This is less than half what I paid for the same thing at City Market.  They don’t always have the same things, so you need to stock up when you can.

The cooler in the back also offers a variety of saving opportunities.  They stock a number of items that vary per week.  This past week the heavy cream was only 1.75.  They usually have all natural yogurts for about .40 for per container.  Sometimes they have eggs, and they often have great deals on organic milk-from soy to goat to cow’s milk.  It’s definitely a store to look into if you don’t receive WIC.

When I spoke to Charles Alexander, I told him that if the countdown were based on service, I would have placed them first.  No doubt about it.  He responded by saying that even though prices and stock may vary by necessity, service is something that they have always stressed.  I say that they have done an incredible job.

Cheese Traders on Williston Road is probably my all time favorite food place to shop.  The high quality foods for seriously low prices make me forget that we’re not rich, because we can fill up a shopping cart and still maintain a very low budget.  I am able to stock up on staple pantry items there, and I can buy exotic foods that add spice and flare to our menus.  I am very happy to feature Cheese Traders as our number 2 store of our Top 5 Grocery Budget Friendly countdown.
