For those of us (like me) who don't have the hands-on knowledge, or an up-to-date book on how to make repairs or install replacement parts when making simple fixes around the house, here is a wonderful service from Michigan State University.
They maintain an easy-to-use database that gives you html (or PDF) versions of clear, straightforward instructions, with pictures.
I have a faucet in the shower that is difficult to turn off. So the keyword for my problem is faucet. I click on the F on the search alpha-index. I see a list of topics including the ones in the graphic at the top of the article.
I click on REPAIRING LEAKING FAUCETS. There is an online version of the replacement procedure, but at the end of the article, I see this notation.

I click on the hyperlink and find a wonderful four-page PDF file that I can print and keep with me while I visit the hardware store and while I replace the faucet assembly.
