2010 Jaguar XJ sedan teaser photo

Jaguar gave an unusual teaser of the new Jaguar XJ at the Shanghai Auto Show, a plan view photograph—from directly overhead. Jaguar’s flagship sedan will have its full reveal on July9 and will go on sale in late 2009, but Mike O’Driscoll, managing director at Jaguar Cars, provided the teaser photo and did confirm a handful of details.

Notably, the Jaguar XJ will have the next-generation of Jaguar's aerospace-inspired aluminum body architecture and will also follow the current trend towards panoramic roofs, although O’Driscoll did not say whether the giant sunroof would be standard or optional equipment.

One thing that definitely can be discerned from the photo provided is that the traditional four-headlamp styling will not be continued into the next generation. The hood lacks the double curves and the body sweeps back from the edges of the grille. It’s squared off across and the quad-lamp styling would require. The new car's hood will have the center ridge also seen on the current model. We expect the new XJ will have much of the same design DNA of the new XF.

Jaguar will produce standard and long-wheelbase models—no surprise there—and Jaguar’s full range of engines will be available in the new XJ, from its fuel-efficient V-6 diesel to the 510 horsepower supercharged V-8. All engines will likely not be available in all markets. Time will tell whether the diesel, very popular in the UK, will be sold in the U.S.

That won’t be known until July when full details about the new 2010 Jaguar XJ are released, presumably something other than a New York skyscraper view of Jaguar’s new premium sedan. Get in line now…or at least on July 9 when official orders will begin to be taken. It's a shame that Ford, under whose tutelage the new Jaguar Cars--including the new Jaguar XJ--were begun is not there to take the bows and reap the (still potential) rewards.
