Rugby images of British artist grace USA Rugby National Playoffs
From DI to DIII the men's club playoff's are set. And if you're in it and anywhere east of the Mississippi river -- Columbia, S.C. is your venue for the weekend.
As the rugby is done, the host have been trying to drum-up some attention for the tournament they are hosting and the game which they love.
That club, Columbia Olde Grey, looked for something memorable and eye-catching to put on posters, flyers and t-shirts rather than just a USA Rugby logo and great amounts of text.
Looking for something original -- and that might sell a few more shirts -- they began looking for something to make a unique, quality advertisement. What they found was RugbyArts.com and its creator Allan Storer.
Storer is an artist and educator who operates between Swansea in south Wales and Twickenham in London.
His London studio sits within earshot of England's home internationals and a lifelong fan of the sport. A place where the atmosphere alone must make focusing on anything other than rugby difficult.
His work uses a lot of color that seems to come directly from the international field. We asked Allan about his art and his rugby leanings.
"The colours I use happen to be international colours and visually work well. Red in particular is a favourite colour of mine, it is vibrant and makes a bold statement," he said. "When I plan a composition I look at the structure first and then think about how the colours will work to add weight and energy."
"Additionally," he continued. "Many of the colours are also worn by local teams as well as internationals e.g Red is worn both by Wales and by the Munsters, Ireland. I have a studio Twickenham, London and Swansea, South Wales; hence surroundings do influence my work, particularly on international days when Twickenham becomes a very lively place with crowds of 85,000 passing my studio -- similarly I was fortunate enough in my youth to be a frequent attender at Cardiff Arms Park on International days, again here the feeling of pride and patriotism stir me but without prejudice."
Since 1996, rugby has been a muse of Storer's. We asked him what it was about the game and the images seen on the field that attracted him to it.
"What is rugby about? Team work, energy, strength and physicality all I feel contribute to dynamic image making and oil painting," he said. "I am interested in the materiality of paint and I like to focus on the medium of paint itself and the desire to unite the idea with technique. Paint creates movement across a canvas. Action in rugby painting I feel is a complete interlocking of image and paint, so that the image is the paint and the paint is the image. The desire to unite idea with technique."
From the home of English rugby at Twickenam traveling the 4,000 miles to Columbia, S.C., Storer is delighted with his image being used. He has even got a little bit of press coverage closer to home. A local paper in Swansea is featuring Storer and the use of his art by Columbia Olde Grey.
