TiVo strange list of Lovable Loser TV Dads
TiVo put out a list of lovable loser TV dads in time for Father’s Day. The list of TV dads contains names that may cause people to scratch their heads in confusion. The powers that be at TiVo picked buffoons, like Al Bundy, Homer Simpson, Ralph Kramden and Tony Soprano. Wait…Did Ralph Kramden even have kids?
Ralph Kramden (Jackie Gleason) of The Honeymooners was selected as a lovable loser dad, even though he and Alice (Audrey Meadows) did not have any offspring. Maybe they thought that sidekick Ed Norton ( Art Carney) was a kid, but he was Ralph’s best buddy. Who made this list anyway?

Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini), the sociopathic mafia boss is nearly as strange a choice for the list as Ralph Kramden. At least Tony and Carmela Soprano (Edie Falco) had kids, Meadow (Jamie Lynn Sigler) and A.J.. (Robert Eiler).
One could think of a lot of words to describe Tony Soprano, but lovable and loser would not be among them. Tony pretty much always got what he wanted on the hit HBO series The Sopranos. It was just about everybody else that turned out to be a loser in Tony’s world.
Credit goes to James Gandolfini’s charisma that Tony Soprano was a sympathetic character at all. Strangely, viewers did root for the mob boss, but repeat viewings revealed that he was even worse than he seemed at first.

Tony Soprano was a guy who murdered, robbed and ruined others. Tony really did not have the characteristics of a lovable loser.
Great father that Tony was, when he took his daughter up to look at a college he took the opportunity to kill an informant he happened upon. The strangling murder was one of the uglier scenes that Tony was involved in. The Tony Soprano character rarely did any killing himself. Usually it was one of his gang members that got to do the violent honors.
At the very end of the series, AJ decided to get some direction and enlist in the military. Tony put a stop to that by getting his son a job in another branch of the mob, working in soft porn movie production. The kid may have had a chance to escape the family business, which he never showed an aptitude for or interest in. Instead of letting the kid go, Tony Soprano reeled the kid in. Way to go dad.
The Sopranos aired their final episode in 2007, but the series is still going strong on A&E and On Demand Cable. A&E airs a slightly cleaned up version of The Sopranos. The series is also out on DVD, available by clicking on The Sopranos banner at the bottom of this article.
