Sky Blue FC announced Wednesday that two of its games this season will be televised on Universal Sports, a channel that is in partnership with NBC.
Universal Sports will televise Sky Blue FC's remaining two games with the Los Angeles Sol. The first is on Friday, May 15, when the Blues travel to the Home Depot Center to take on the Sol. The second game occurs in New Jersey on Saturday, June 13.
The agreement is a nice step for both Sky Blue FC and Women's Professional Soccer, both of which continue to try to establish a local and national footprint.
Televising the games adds two more national telecasts to WPS' schedule, both of which involve league poster-child Marta. It will also allow locals who cannot make the game to watch it on television and be exposed to their hometown team.
If all work out well with the two games, it could lead to further television opportunities down the line - whether on Universal Sports or not. Local television coverage could prove to be a huge asset to WPS, which is looking to make solid local footprints before trying to gain more of a national presence.
Universal Sports televises Olympic sports year-round and reaches 30 million digital cable households nationwide.
The Chicago Red Stars became the first WPS team to stream a game live online when their 4-0 win over Boston on April 25 could be views live online. The Red Stars will also webcast their July 26th match with the Washington Freedom.
