When you think of cool breezes, silky softness or the lovely sound of a brook, the pure haute couture elegance of Jenny Lee bridal designs should come to mind. Her gowns exemplify comfort, purity, and simplicity.
When I caught up with Jenny Lee she was showing her collection to a captivated bride and her mother. “My designs are made from the thought that the bride should wear the dress, not the dress wearing the bride.” How true is that!! Her gowns are elegant and seem to fall effortlessly, gliding around her prospective bride's body.
Congratulations to Jenny because her beautiful bridal designs are featured in the comedy 'Ghosts of Girlfriends Past,' which opened this past Friday starring Jennifer Garner and Matthew McConaughey.
What comes to mind when you’re designing a dress, Jenny?
I think of a woman’s body. That is where I always get my inspiration. No matter what her shape is, I want her to love the way she looks and feels in my dresses. For me the curves a woman has, is everything I want to accentuate. I will tell you fabric is only 50% of the design; the rest is what you put in it.

I actually have one of your dresses, Jenny, and it’s simply beautiful. It reminds me of a pair of silk pajamas. What makes your dresses so incredibly soft?
Thank you for the compliment. My dresses are made from silk exclusively from Como, Italy and just for us. What makes this silk so soft is that each piece I use for my creations is hand washed. Also no matter what dress she chooses from the collection they are all fully lined with silk. Just so your brides also know we only have the finest lace - Alencon and Chantilly directly from France.
Really?
Yes, I never use a machine process. I think it damages the fibers of the material. My dresses are soft because they are gently washed by hand. From the first to last stitch, every dress is hand stitched by one seamstress. We do not mass-produce dresses. When she tries on a dress, we get her exact measurements and then the dress is created just for her. Like her, this dress is then a one of a kind.

Tell me about embellishments. Most of your dresses don’t have them.
You are right. I want the groom to look at his bride for the first time in her dress and see her. Most men don’t seem to care about bows or rhinestones; he wants to see his beautiful bride. So again simplicity to allow the bride's inner beauty to shine through is what I create. The comfort of the dress is for her, the beauty of the dress for them both.
Will you ever create a piece with a bit ‘more bling’?
[Laughs] I am planning for my next collection to use Swarovski crystals. I won’t use rhinestones because over time, they turn black and ruin the dress.
What else are you planning for 2010?
I am planning to use more color. I actually have a ‘blush colored’ dress exclusively at Bergdorf. There are also some light blue 2-piece dresses, as well as some mix-and-match bridal pieces that I am now working on. Some are bolero tops and have separate long flowing skirts. I think having mixed pieces is going to be a big trend for the future.
Personally, I love her designs; energy and passion to create a beautiful dress and yet have the true beauty shine through – you, the bride.
Until next time…
