Josh Mazzola’s solo home run in the top of the fifth inning was the margin of difference in San Jose’s 2-1 victory over High Desert in game one of the California League Championship Series Thursday night at Stater Bros. Stadium.
Mazzola’s homer to left off Maverick’s starter Steven Hensley (1-1) broke a 1-1 tie. It was one of only six hits for San Jose. Roger Kieschnick knocked in the Giants’ other run with a solo homer in the second inning.
Giants’ starter Clayton Tanner (2-0) struck out nine hitters in seven innings. He gave up one run on seven hits to win his second post-season game. His ERA actually rose to 0.64.
David Quinowski and Rafael Cova each pitched an inning of scoreless relief, with Cova picking up his second save.
The Mavericks scored their only run in the fifth on back-to-back singles by James McOwen and Carlos Peguero, and an RBI double by Alex Liddi. But Tanner ended the threat by striking out Joseph Dunigan and getting Brent Johnson to ground out.
Game two of the series is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Friday in Adelanto. Lefthander Mauricio Robles is scheduled to throw for High Desert. Lefty Paul Oseguera is expected to pitch for the Giants.
