For the second straight year, the San Jose Giants will go to a game five in the North Division series. Tuesday night at Sam Lynn Ballpark, Bakersfield beat the Giants, 11-4, to even the best-of-five series at two games apiece.
The South Division series will also go to a fifth game as Rancho Cucamonga scored a 2-1 victory over High Desert.
The deciding game in the North will be played Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at Municipal Stadium. Scheduled starters are David Mixon (3-1) for San Jose and Richard Bleier (7-11) for the Ports.
Mixon pitched mostly out of the bullpen for the Giants this season but started and pitched six innings on September third as three pitchers combined to no-hit the Lake Elsinore Storm.
Bleier has experience in elimination games as he won the deciding game three in the Mini Series between Bakersfield and the Modesto Nuts.
On Tuesday, the Giants got off to a 1-0 lead in the first inning thanks in part to three Blaze errors. But Kyle Nicholson couldn’t hold the lead. Nicholson gave up eight earned runs in 3 1/3 innings. First baseman Ian Gac was the hero for Bakersfield, driving in six runs on a three-run homer, a two-run single and a sacrifice fly.
Tanner Roark, who had a 10-0, 2.70 ERA for Bakersfield during the regular season, started and gave up three runs on four hits in seven innings to pick up the win.
Last year, the Giants lost to eventual league champion Stockton in five games in the North Division Series.
