The San Jose Giants will take on the Bakersfield Blaze in the California League North Division Series that begins Saturday afternoon at Municipal Stadium. Bakersfield beat Modesto 6-1 on Friday to take the Mini Series two games to one.
San Jose Manager Andy Skeels has named lefthander Clayton Tanner as his starting pitcher for game one.
“Tanner’s throwing real well for us,” says Skeels. “He’s been one our solid guys for us all year and he’s probably the best one for us to get us off on the right foot. He’s been here, he knows the league. Also, he’s gotten a lot better the second half.”
The 21-year-old Tanner finished the season winning his last four decisions. Overall, he had a 12-6 record and 3.17 ERA, which was third in the California League. The Concord native made four starts against the Blaze and was a perfect 3-0 with a 2.29 ERA.
Skeels says Paul Oseguera will start game two on Sunday evening. Oseguera was 7-7 record with a 3.77 ERA over 17 starts for the Giants. The rest of the rotation has not been announced, but Skeels indicated that Eric Surkamp, recently promoted from Augusta, will get a start. Surkamp finished with an 11-5 record and 3.30 ERA and was second in the South Atlantic League with 169 strikeouts.

Another player to watch for is Augusta call-up Francisco Peguero, one of the top outfield prospects in the San Francisco organization.
“He’s a five-tool guy,” says Skeels. “This kid is phenomenal. There’s nothing he can’t do. He’ll get in the lineup somewhere.”
In 58 games with Augusta, Peguero hit.340 with 12 doubles, four triples, one home run and 34 RBI’s while also stealing 15 bases.
The Giants had the season edge on the Blaze, 11-8, but were swept in three games the last time the two teams met in Bakersfield August 11-13.
Game two is scheduled for Sunday at 6 p.m. at Municipal Stadium. Games three and four, if necessary, would be in Bakersfield. A game five would be Wednesday night in San Jose
