I typically leave sports bar discussion to the Baltimore Sports Bar Examiner, but I would be remiss if I did not tell you about the best Orioles bar special I've found this year.
Hit the town on any given Sunday in the Fall, and you will find dollar drafts, appetizer specials, and all kinds of purple-themed Ravens specials for football fans.
But come Spring, many bars in town don't even play Orioles games, let alone make efforts to court fans with food and drink specials.
The few Orioles “specials” I've seen this baseball season are of the lame $5 orange vodka drinks or $11 Oriole-themed sushi roll variety.
No thanks.
But one bar in Fells Point is putting the “special” back in Orioles specials.
Todd's Corner Todd Conner's, a cozy little pub on the corner of Aliceanna and Broadway, sells $1.50 Natty Bohs and $5 dollar wings during all Orioles games.
I made my way to TC last Tuesday night to see Jason Berken win his MLB debut. On this evening, a casual crowd filled the small bar area, that probably seats about a dozen patrons. Most guests were partaking in the O's-themed specials, as did I. Both the traditional lb of hot wings and the Old Bay wings were juicy and well-seasoned. I also enjoyed additional reasonably priced bar munchies, including veggie flat bread pizza ($7.99) and buffalo chicken sliders ($8.99).
The bartender at TC was attentive and friendly, which is more than I can say for the barkeeps at some neighborhood establishments (I'm looking at you, Tyson's).
Todd Conners' menu ventures beyond simple pub fare and includes five salads that come in small and large sizes ($3.99 to $12.99) , sandwiches ($7.99 to $13.99) , and dinner entrees ($10.99 to $24.99). Chef specials change daily.
Non baseball-related events include Sunday brunch and a monthly wine club.
Maybe I'll make it back to Todd Conners this summer to sit outside and enjoy a proper meal. Or maybe I'll just go back the next time I want to enjoy cheap drinks and good wings during the O's game. The wings and munchies made Berken's victory all the more savory. And hey, it's not like many other bars in the area are courting baseball fans.
