Having avoided his federal trial for an undetermined length of time, Barry Bonds has another legal process to deal with.
His wife of 10 years, Liz Watson filed for a legal separation asking for support, and joint legal custody of their ten year old child, Aisha Lynn. Bonds was previously married to Susann Branco.
Bonds continues to wait for MLB to recognize its error that has kept him from receiving an offer of employment. He has appeared at a baseball park once in a while to watch a game and went as far as to announce, from the field at AT&T Park in April of this year that he was "not retired".
His criminal trial for perjury and obstruction of justice is on hold pending a decision by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. The prosecution asked for review of a pre-trial ruling that excluded material evidence against Bonds.
The government considered the evidence important enough to file the appeal literally on the eve of the trial in February. The judge in the case stayed the proceedings pending the result of the appeal. It has been more than three months and it could take the rest of the year or longer until a ruling is announced.
In the meantime, the divorce filing doesn't sound contentious on its face but you and I know things can get ugly. Although he and Branco divorced in 1994 it took six years for courts to decide that she could not override the pre-nuptual agreement she signed in 1988. It is unknown whether Bonds and Watson have signed a similar agreement.
