With summer almost here, are you trying to find ways to entertain the family during the summer months? Although summer camp and swimming pools are good day activities, why not make a commitment to foster a pet for the summer? Fostering a pet is is an opportunity that not only helps animals but also instills responsibility, compassion for animals and maturity that is much more rewarding than lounging at the pool.
By fostering a pet for a short amount of time (usually a minimum one month commitment), families provide a homeless and loving dog or cat with something similar to a vacation! Not only does the pet benefit, but the foster family gets the opportunity to learn about the responsibility involved in caring for a pet and possibly prepare for incoporating a furry friend into their lifestyle permanently. If you are a teacher, you may find the summer break a wonderful opportunity to foster a pet for the summer months when your schedule is not as hectic.
Personally, I adopted my pug from a foster home that worked in conjunction with the rescue organization I found my pug through, Boxer Angels Rescue. The husband and wife foster parents adored pugs and had three pugs in their home at the time of my adoption. Due to circumstances in their life, they decided that fostering was a great option for this time in their life, and they provided the pugs with love, affection, and a wonderful temporary home. And, from the smiles on their faces, and anecdotes about how the pugs slept on their bed each and every night, I knew fostering was a rewarding and enjoyable experience for both of them.
If you are interested in learning about fostering, The Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals and Animal Haven, are providing a unique opportunity and hosting a Spring Foster Care Recruitment Fair for the public on Tuesday, June 2 from 4:30 to 7:30 PM at Animal Haven , located at 251 Centre Street, Manhattan (Between Broome & Grand Streets, near the NRQW and 6 Trains). The Mayors Alliance for NYC’s Animals, Inc., founded in 2002 and powered by Maddie’s Fund, is a coalition of more than 140 animal rescue groups and shelters that are working with the City of New York to find homes for every cat and dog in the city that needs one. The Alliance and its partners intend to achieve the goal of having no dog or cat of reasonable health and temperament killed merely because he or she does not have a home by 2015.
