In the new Rolling Stone, Adam Lambert finally opens up about his sexuality, his past, and how Kris Allen is "totally my type."
In the cover story, "Wild Idol: The Liberation of Adam Lambert" , the San Diego native says he's proud to be gay and says it should come as a surprise to nobody.
"I embrace it. It's just another part of me," he says. But he adds, "I'm trying to be a singer, not a civil rights leader." So don't expect to see him popping up as a spokesman for gay rights.
Adam says he went on American Idol after an epiphany while doing mushrooms at the Burning Man festival: “I knew that it was my only shot to be taken seriously in the recording industry, because it’s fast and broad." Lambert was a musical theater performer for several years before entering the contest.
He also reveals his crush on Idol winner Kris Allen. The two roomed together at the show's Bel Air mansion during the entire season. "I was like, `Oh, sh--, they put me with the cute guy,'" Lambert says. "Distracting! He's the one guy that I found attractive in the whole group on the show: nice, nonchalant, pretty and totally my type - except that he has a wife. I mean, he's open-minded and liberal, but he's definitely 100 percent straight."
Adam says he refused to change for American Idol: ”I was like, ‘I’m going to glue rhinestones on my eyelids, bitch!'" He also says he considered coming out right after the show ended, but thought, ‘I’m going to wait for Rolling Stone, that will be cooler. I didn’t want the Clay Aiken thing and the celebrity magazine bulls--t. I need to be able to explain myself in context."
Adam has been asked by reporters whether or not speculation about his sexuality cost him the win on American Idol. He said, "probably." Now that's he's out for good, it will be interesting to see how his post-Idol career compares to 100% straight Kris Allen's.
The Rolling Stone issue featuring Adam on the cover hits newstands this Friday, June 12th.
