Will Adam Lambert's boyfriend keep him from winning American Idol?

Drake, Adam, and Adam's best friend Danielle

There has been so much speculation about who will win American Idol, you'd think the final two contestants were presidential candidates (well, Idol finale voting is actually higher than presidential election voting).  But who will win, and does it matter?

Adam Lambert is hands down the judges' favorite.  Kris Allen is cute and charming and all, and he can sing, but he sorely lacks the showmanship and ability to stir up controversy like Adam.

Last week, Adam showed up at a dinner with fellow Idol contestants with a dude named Drake, whom he introduced as "my boyfriend".  Any speculation about whether or not Adam is gay should now be put to rest.  With that one simple act at the Olive Garden in Burbank, Adam announced to the world that yes, he is gay, and no, he's not hiding it.

While most people have commented that Adam's sexuality doesn't matter because Idol is a singing competition and he's the most talented, American red-state teenage girl voters might find Adam's bold affirmation a turn off and vote for Kris instead. Also, Kris is most likely to gain Danny Gokey's fan base in final voting.

Idol has a history of crowning the least interesting and most generic finalist as the winner (see Ruben Studdard, Jordin Sparks, Taylor Hicks, what's-her-face, et. al.).  The only two exceptions are Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood.  The deeply conservative show pretends to be cutting edge, but when it comes down to the finals, they go with the contestant who is the least likely to be "different" or stir up controversy.

Will that fateful night at the Olive Garden be the thing that prevents Adam from winning?  Someone on Facebook from South Carolina said they were voting for Kris, because he was "anything but that eyeliner-wearing Jonas Brothers wannabe."  The Disney-created Jonas Brothers?  What is she smoking?

I personally think Adam will be better off not winning American Idol.  That way, he is free to be himself, to be the true performance artist that he is, and stir up as much controversy as he wants. This generation needs its Ziggy Stardust and Freddie Mercury.  We need the feathers and rhinestones and heavy makeup to transport us to another dimension, like Adam did in his pre-Idol years.  Do you really think we'll ever get to see that side of Adam again if he wins?

Who gives a damn if Adam has a boyfriend?  He can have as many boyfriends as he wants and I'll love him all the more.  Give the crown to the bland, guitar-strumming guy from Arkansas.  Adam already has one.  He's a superstar and will reign as the new King of glam rock for many years to come.
