The 2009 Run For The Wall continues, and Glenn and Cathy Buchholz continue to keep me apprised of the events of their journey. Here's their latest report.
It is now day 5 complete. Friday we headed out of Gallup, with the pledge and a prayer, bright and early in 40 degree weather and sunshine. Cool and beautiful, couldn't help but think about God and all of his creation. We had a state patrol bike leading us. Fueling went well. We get kudos every day for the great job that the fuel crew and stageing crew does. Makes it all worth it.
At that stop as well as every stop we have all the water and snacks we can cram down in a matter of a few minutes then on to the next stop. We landed at the HD dealer in Santa Fe for lunch to great sandwiches, chips, fruit etc. Always nice to talk with all the members on the run during those breaks. At Santa Fe we learned that the run had suffered its first accident. Just before we merged onto I-25 from I-40 a single bike went down. He was treated and released with several broken ribs.
On to Angel Fire, NM, to the Viet Nam veteran's memorial. The statue of the boy looking up at the Huey in awe always gets to me. He has such an inocent look on his face and a look of wonder. He has a pad and pen in hand and can't really explain what he is seeing. Pretty much says it all for many of the young men who go to battle for the first time.
Up early on Saturday morning to a foggy and dreary day. We rode back to Angel Fire to stage for the day's run. After the pledge and prayer we left in a misty 32 degrees. We rode to Raton, NM, where we were greated by the smiling faces of the Independent Riders of Raton and a bunch of our CMA brothers and sisters. The Independant Riders paid for all the fuel and all the coffee and snacks. CMA people helped pump gas and love on the riders. Was really great to get some hugs from our familiar brothers and sisters.
From there we rode on to La Junta, CO. There we were met by ABATE District 18 of Colorado and they paid for our fuel and lunch. They even helped us fuel the rest of the pack. We stayed the night in Burlington, CO after being fed again by the VFW there.
The ride suffered another accident Saturday with a broken ankle. One of the road gaurds went down after hitting a patch of sand we were told.
Up again Sunday morning early. The VFW fed us one of the best breakfasts that we have ever had. The foks in the West and Midwest really know how to treat their veterans.
After a pledge and prayer we hit the highway in the 40 degree sunshine. Was very uneventful except for the side headwind that beat us most of the day. We stopped in Oakley, KS, for a great lunch provided by the VFW and Ladies Auxillary and the community. Then off to Junction City for the night. We had a great supper of lasagna, salad, and popcicles. CMA had a free bike wash out in the parking lot put on by the chapter out of Manhattan, KS. Nice folks.
Bye for now. Keep the prayers coming as the hurts and concerns are being healed. We are experiencing much safety also.
