Jipsy Nefarious
As Miami's premier photographer, Jipsy is poised to take over the world. Since launching her site in 2005, Jipsy's photos have graced countless newspapers, magazines and websites. She has photographed hundreds of celebrities, scenesters, glamazons and parties. Want a chance to be photographed by Jipsy? Catch her every Saturday at the infamous Poplife party at White Room and now at Sunday's Just Add Water party at the Fontainbleau Resort on Miami Beach. Her photos tell a story, with captivating colors, stories and characters. This week's Spotlight feature takes us into the world of Jipsy's elusive camera and the results are spectacular.

1. How would you describe your photography? What inspires you when you are behind the camera?

What you see on NefariousGirl.com? it’s not “night life” photography, I like to call photojournalism. What I’ve been shooting for almost 5 years, in and out of the clubs, the people, the places, the DJs – I have stories.

What use to inspire me was capturing parties and clubs that were below the mainstream. Fashion, music, venues and the vibe was different right down to the cocktails, and no one was capturing that side of Miami. I also wanted to share the moments that other people didn’t see on those club sites. That’s what really inspired me at first, I couldn’t feel of the party and I knew there was more than just sexy girls smiling and posing at the club.

 2. What celebrity photographer would you have shoot you and why?

Naturally it would have to be David Lachappelle but I have always been a fan of Steven Meisel. His images have evolved into, and I use this word cautiously, great fashion photography. I’ll strap on a pair of Louboutin’s and shoot in acid rain, whatever he wants.

 3. What is the most exciting or inspiring event or party that you have ever photographed?

These are two separate emotions. The most exciting has been the 60th anniversary Pucci Brunch during Art Basel 2007 at Norma and Luis Quintero’s ridiculously opulent waterfront estate. It was exciting to see everyone with their Pucci, including myself (ehem). The ladies were all buzzing by noon from the champagne, it was by far the most memorable afternoons.

As for the most inspiring event or party? It’s really not about that but more like music and fashion. If there is great music and the people are not clones of the mall window shops, I can easily get visions of pictures – moments, as I like to call them. Therefore shooting an event and/or party becomes easy and you can feel it in the pictures.

 4. What's the place you're most likely to be found when you’re not behind the lens?

Almost never happens. I carry a camera with me at all times. Even in bed.

 5. What is one place or party that you wish you could photograph?

I don’t know how to answer this. I shoot where I am invited and are welcomed to shoot. There really isn’t anything I wish to shoot when it comes to parties and nightlife.

6. What do you have in store for the rest of 2009? What can your fans expect?

I am slowing down on the club circuit but I am still sticking with my weekly residency at Poplife – that party and I have been together since I started. I have a great collection of images. And…I just bought an underwater case and I started to shoot some pool parties, like Just Add Water. We just need a nice sunny day so the pictures come out crystal clear.

As for the rest of the year, who knows. Recently I’ve started to do more private photo shoots in fashion and music. I’ve been shooting artist and people I am interested in, diverse images, experimenting. As for the events and parties, I am working with some publications almost every day, so keep an eye out on my blog to see where they end up.
