A beginner's guide to the Seattle International Film Festival

After living in New York, you start to assume that all cool events involve velvet ropes or lots of cash. That's why I couldn't believe how accessible the Seattle International Film Festival is the first time I attended three years ago.
The movie showings kick off tomorrow, and you don't have to be a member of the organization to attend (movies during the festival only cost $11). But this isn't a poor man's film festival - SIFF is the largest film festival in the U.S. and this year, features a tribute to Spike Lee (so don't do a double-take if you see him around town).
But with close to 400 films to see, how's a movie buff supposed to navigate this festival? Well, here are a few basic pointers for newbies:
1.) Find a schedule of all the films and circle or highlights the ones you consider must-see movies. Most films only play twice, and you might find some overlap between films you'd like to catch.
2.) Buy tickets in advance online. Not only do tickets often sell out quickly for popular films, but lines for the box office can get pretty long.
3.) Get there early -- there's no late seating allowed at SIFF, and audiences line up outside the theater well before the film starts. So be warned!
4.) If you plan on seeing a lot of movies, get the SIFF membership. There are varying levels, but $55 saves you $2 on every movie ticket and you get dibs on tickets that aren't open to the public. Plus, you get invited to SIFF events throughout the year.
5.) If all else fails, there are rush tickets available. But they're cash only and it's first come, first serve. So be ready to stand in line!
Lastly, remember to enjoy yourself - this is truly a special event featuring films from 62 countries, including 31 world premiers. Have fun!
