Twilight--not the last (or first) word on vampires

The second cinema installment of the Twilight series (based on the novels by Stephanie Meyer) was the third largest movie opening in history, raking in over 140 million dollars in three days. That’s big news. But all this news might make one think that romantic vampires were something new in the world of movies and books. The truth is that the vampire as a romantic character has been around for years. There are many writers who include vampires as sexy heroes or villains in romance novels, and several of them live and write in Texas.
For example, bestselling authors Kerrelyn Sparks, Nina Bangs and Gerry Bartlett have been writing paranormal romances that feature vampires for several years.
Bangs’ latest novel MY WICKED VAMPIRE continues her paranormal series The Castle of Dark Dreams featuring characters Sparkle Stardust and sassy cat Ganymede as well as sexy vampire heroes and heroines. This series started back in 2005 with WICKED NIGHTS and remains popular among paranormal romance fans. Then there’s her MacKenzie Vampire series that began in 2004 with MASTER OF ECSTASY. Bangs demonstrates a long-lasting talent with bringing vampire characters to life. Bartlett’s Glory St. Clair series features a vampire heroine with a lush plus-size body (she was turned at a time of the month when she was retaining serious water) and a sense of humor. The first novel in the series REAL VAMPIRES HAVE CURVES was published in 2007, and the most recent REAL VAMPIRES HATE THEIR THIGHS will publish in February 2010. Sparks’ Love at Stake series combines suspense, humor, and sensuality with paranormal elements, and she started it in 2005. The stories revolve around the heroic Vamps and their production of synthetic blood for undead consumption. The evil Malcontents, of course, prefer the real thing. Seven books in the series have proven popular with paranormal romance fans and her stories—like Bartlett’s and Bang’s—include other paranormal characters like shapeshifters…and even a few humans.
