It has already been established that judo throws are excellent takedown techniques for mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters because they allow for perfect control of the opponent's position on the ground and they are the perfect setup for a subsequent submission technique.

The O-Goshi (hip throw) is the very first throw a new student of judo learns and as such it is one of the most effective takedown techniques for MMA. It is simple and relatively easy to master, even without a gi or intensive training. Most importantly, it allows a fighter to place his opponent in the perfect position for an armbar before the other guy even realizes what just happened.

Advantages of using O-goshi as takedown technique:

  • It disorientates the opponent
  • It sets up the perfect submission technique: arm bar:
  • It is quick, easy and effective even for beginning judokas
  • It works in real MMA fights (watch the M-1 fight video below!)
