I have not yet had the pleasure of meeting Laura Mandracchia, but I am going to safely assume that she is little.  The bakery which she owns and operates is named “Little Laura’s Sweets,” and after tasting a handful of these delightful and memorable treats, I deduce that the “Little” simply cannot refer to her baked goods (which are large in both size and taste).  Little Laura, as she must therefore be named, packs a hefty punch with her sweets, and is responsible for the single most decadent and flavorful chocolate cookie I’ve tasted on the West Coast, the Wawa Cookie.

To call the Wawa simply a “cookie” does not give it nearly enough credit.  It takes the spherical shape of a cookie, to be certain, but a secret, rich layer of roasted marshmallow within the Wawa’s outer folds pounces on you like a frisky kitten.  You didn’t see it coming, and you were certainly taken aback, but once you start engaging it there is nothing more pleasant.  Similarly notable is the fudgy chocolate topping and cake-like texture that defies what we have come to accept as standard cookie fare.  You’ll never crave a Chips Ahoy (or a Mallomar) again.

Nor will you find purpose in a Reece’s Peanut Butter Cup after tasting Laura’s Peanut Butter Cups, palm sized delicacies that weigh slightly less than bars of pure gold.  These are hefty cups – cups for lumberjacks – and the crumbly peanut butter mixture is hearty enough to support a thick and milky chocolate layer resting atop in perfect symbiosis.

Two other smash hits are the Giant Oreo cookie and the Snickerdoodles, both immense in size yet surprisingly subtle.  Laura currently operates out of Hermosa Beach, and to taste her delicacies (which you should do post haste), you can contact her via phone or email (see below).  Catch her while you can – this bakery phenom has only begun her skyward journey.

You can order by phone at 1-888-872-6830 or by email at orders@littlelaurasweets.com.
