The traditional colors of the holidays rarily mesh well with the existing schemes going on in most homes. It is a challenge to find the right look to go with your homes decor. By sticking to basics in color and design, homeowners can marry the two looks and still have a beautiful well coordinated home for the holidays.
Existing Metals-Most homes have metal decor, trim, accessories and hardware located through each room. Take into account what metal elements are in your room. Most updated homes now have a great deal of brushed nickel, pewters, and cast iron decor. These metal finishes are showing up in ceiling fans, door handles, lamps, and wall decor. The nature of these metals make them a great accent for any decor. Choose holiday ornaments that have these same metal finishes for your tree.
Existing Color Scheme- The existing color scheme you have may be anything but traditional with regards to typical holiday decor. However, if you can determine the warmth or coolness of the overall color scheme it can help you pick the right corresponding colors to accent and meld with it. Cool jewel tones marry well with the dark colors of greens and reds. Warm color tones will meld well with brighter reds, and greens. In addition, adding hints of crystal, glass and either whites, or cream can pull together the whole look of your home without clashing with existing decor, once you determine the overall color scheme and the tones in your room.
Using what you have- If you have a lot of colored glass ornaments from decor days gone by, try simply spray painting them the right color to bring them into the new updated scheme you have going on. Recycling these ornaments is a good way to save money in the long run. Having simple fabric furniture covers and throw pillows can also pull together the entire holiday feel of the room. Don't be afraid to use Christmas plates and other Christmas themed items in a decorative way. Holiday decor should also be fun.
