Vestibules, also known as foyers are usually single rooms that are a barrier between the interior quarters of a home or building and the outdoors. Its purpose has always been to allow entrance into the home, but not to the interior living area. A way to protect the inner sanctimony of a home owners privacy.
In many homes across America, foyers/vestibules have become extremely popular and you will see many new homes with this design feature as a standard addition to the blueprint. First impressions are always pretty unforgiving, and your vestibule is the window to your lifestyle. At one time space for a vestibule seemed wasted and of no real value and there was a decline in their presence in construction. As homeowners became more successful and space of any kind was a desirable commodity. Large foyers were regarded as a statement of wealth, and became a status symbol to many. Having it be the prelude to coming attractions in your home is an important consideration in its decor. What do you want your foyer to tell your guests about you?
Traditional decor found in vestibules usually consist of a small table, desk, a wall mirror, and a floral arrangement. Larger foyers, may even sport an armchair, hall tree, or settee. Most vestibules are an opportunity to try an idea at little expense design-wise to the homeowner. A paint color you have been indecisive about, can generally be used in your foyer first. Unsure about a floor covering, rug, or even wall decor, the vestibule can become the initial guinea pig. A vestibule should not be overlooked in the overall design scheme of a home. Regard it as you would other parts of your home, and invest in it. A beautiful mirror with a pair of wall sconces add a sophisticated touch.
Consider the function you want your foyer to perform. Focus decorative efforts in making it a welcoming entrance. Address all the senses, sight, smell, touch, etc. Fresh flowers, pot pourrie, soft lighting can all offer a comforting and welcoming entry into your home. If other rooms are easily visible from your foyer, consider its decor to correspond with that room. Going a shade lighter, or darker in paint color, and keeping wood trims, furniture pieces similar give the overall polish needed to make the room a wonderful representation of the rest of the home. Whether your vestibule is small or large, its function is about addressing all needs of the homeowner and guest.
Do not overlook the beautiful role your vestibule can play in your design schemes for the holidays. Many home owners have Christmas trees decorated inside the foyer, space permitting, and it also adds to the warmth and spirit of the home.
