New York State is such a large land mass, extending from the Great Lakes at the extreme west to the Atlantic Ocean at the extreme east, and has so many different geologic formations that it can encompass vastly different viticultural areas.

The state's wine production comes from more than 250 wineries, located in specifically defined areas:

  • North Fork and The Hamptons (Long Island)
  • Finger Lakes (Central to west-central Upstate)
  • Lake Erie and Chautaqua Region
  • Niagara Escarpment
  • Central New York and Lake Ontario
  • Hudson River Valley and Catskills
  • New York City

In addition, there are emerging mini-pockets of winemaking the Adirondack Mountains in northernmost New York and the Upper Hudson Valley east of Albany and extending to the Vermont and Massachusetts borders.

New York is the nation's No. 3 wine-producing state, trailing only California and Washington State.
