Are the Great Outdoors in your job description? (Jen Trinque)
Je

Quick, name 10 things that you love about your job. Did you think of 10? How about eight? Four? Okay, okay, it might be hard to think of 10 wonderful things about your job, other than you feel lucky to have one and thrilled you can pay all your dog-grooming bills.

But what if you want to think about moving on to a job with greener pastures and greater potential to satisfy your soul?

How about writing your own job description? When you start a new gig you're normally handed a long list of what you're expected to do, how you're expected to do it, and how many hours per week you'll be desperate to escape working. What if you were in charge of your own job description?

Try it, it's fun! Type up your own formal document of exactly what you'd be doing if you were to be working at your dream job. (If you're having a little trouble getting started, list some of your favorite things from your current or previous jobs.) Would you only work 10 hours a week? Would you travel frequently? Work in the Great Outdoors? Work from home? Would you be selling crafts on the sidewalk? Wearing a business suit making sales calls? Be as specific as you can. Don't hold back! This is your ideal job, no one else's.

The purpose of this exercise is to get you excited: there are no limitations to what you can accomplish! Once you complete your job description, post it up somewhere obvious where you'll see it frequently. Update it with new ideas when something tickles your fancy. Brainstorm ways to work the things you'd be doing at your fantasy job into your current job to improve your mood. Don't forget to keep reaching, because your dream career is right around the corner!
