Pedro Rodelas el primo tenore performs at Ravens Theater

Pedro Rodelas el primo tenore will be performing Rodgers & Hammerstein along with Andrew Lloyd Webber including Phantom of the Opera this weekend at the Ravens Theater in Healdsburg (Silicon Valley).  Friday through Sunday.  I saw the tenor sing recently from the Girl of the Golden West to celebrate Berkeley Opera’s 30th anniversary, headlined by Ruth Ann Swenson. What drew my attention to Pedro before I saw him is his role at Yosemite’s Bracebridge Dinner, the old English 3 1/2 hour musical feast. I wanted a preview before Christmas.  He has gorgeous photos on his website.

Yet he's a tenor for all seasons. He emails from San Felipe in Baja where he has been sunning himself by the pool and preparing a dozen songs for this weekend in Healdsburg. He's also working on his tan.  Tried to stay awake, but the wash of the waves and the breeze in the trees lulled me away . . .

Meanwhile here are some photos Pedro took of the moon rise over the Sea of Cortez. I always say creative personalities have more than one outlet.

Pedro emails, I’m here until Wednesday, then I’m due in Healdsburg on Thursday for the fundraiser I mentioned. It’s for the Raven Performing Arts Theater.  Here’s the link to the theater’s website: http://www.raventheater.org/ . Look for the “Broadway Magic” link for more info. . . It’s basically Rodgers and Hammerstein and Andrew Lloyd Webber. I’ve got about a dozen songs.

BROADWAY MAGIC
A tribute to the music of Rodgers & Hammerstein and Andrew Lloyd Webber
Start Time: 8p.m. Friday & Saturday; 2p.m. Sunday
General Admission: $20 Friday & Saturday; $15 Sunday
This concert features several soloists, a chorus, and the Raven Symphony Orchestra performing classic Broadway tunes from Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cats, Evita, Sunset Boulevard, Phantom of the Opera, and more, as well as Rodgers & Hammerstein's South Pacific, Carousel, and Oklahoma, to name just a few.
Some Enchanted Evening," "Oklahoma," "Memory," and "Music of the Night"

Also from San Felipe, some playa and palapa pix.

As for San Francisco, Pedro notes Juan Diego Florez is one of my favorites! I’m planning on tickets for his upcoming Daughter [La Fille du Regiment by Donizetti] with SFO.

This will be in October with Juan Diego Florez. JD’s DVD of La Fille with Natalie Dessay just received Best DVD from BBC Music and I agree absolutely. A review is to come.

Moreover Girl of the Golden West will be next summer, June of 2010 with Deborah Voight singing Minnie. The song Pedro chose for Berkeley Opera’s celebration was about keeping Minnie from the truth about his sad fate and letting her think he’s free.

Meanwhile.  Pedro will return to Yosemite’s Ahwanee for Christmas of 2009, singing the role of the chef at a 1600s olde English feast hosted by Squire Bracebridge. Ansel Adams used to play the jester.  It’s the San Francisco choristers who perform at Bracebridge in Yosemite and I remember Fred Matthews telling me about it. I remember chorister Bill who plays nature loving Nathaniel at Bracebridge, chatting in the green room about his recumbent bicycle when I supered in Rigoletto.

According to Yosemite, Bracebridge is a unique American tradition that blends world-class musical theater and cuisine with Washington Irving’s tales about a 17th-century Old English Yuletide, all set in the majestic natural beauty of Yosemite in winter.

Food for Thought

Bracebridge has other holiday performances at the Awhanee during Christmas, here’s Santa Baby.

The 2008 package rates ranged from $925 to $1654 plus tax, and include gratuity. Tickets to just the performance and seven-course dinner were $375 per person, including tax and gratuity.

According to Yosemite, the Bracebridge Dinner at Yosemite is the perfect antidote for holiday anxiety. For more information or to make reservations visit http://www.yosemitepark.com/bracebridge or call (801) 559-4949.
