As I mentioned in a previous article (here), support groups are very helpful when you're losing weight.
Online support groups are especially helpful because of the availability of 24 hour support. You can log onto the support group at 3 pm when you want a chocolate bar to get you through the afternoon, and you can log on again at 7 pm when you want a bowl of ice cream while you’re watching TV. Instead of giving in to your cravings, you can log onto the support groups and post until your cravings have passed.
Another advantage of online support groups is that there are people in different stages of the weight loss journey. These other people can give you ideas on how you can get through your cravings without going over the number of calories you should have during the day.
If you are going to have a pot luck at work, you can post to the support group asking for ideas on what to bring or ideas a way through the minefield of unhealthy foods that will be at the pot luck. No matter what suggestions are made, the next time you log on you can tell them how you did with following the plan that you made.
People who have been members of the same support group for a number of months can support each other even more. Knowing that someone has a hard time when they get home from work at 11:30 pm, you can ask them whether they had a late night snack or went straight to bed.
