When my second child was born and my grant-funded job ended nearly two years ago, I suddenly found myself with more limited income and more time with kids (which is far more limiting than time without them). I needed to come up with a list of activities to do with my kids, indoors and out, that didn't cost much. This post will mark the first about frugal activities that can be done with kids, based on what I am continuing to learn!
My first stop was the library. Besides story time, which is fabulous at most libraries that offer it, many libraries offer handouts on all sorts of topics, including low-cost children's activities and outings. Locally, the library is also where one can find copies of the free magazines, BayAreaParent and Parents' Press.
Both BayAreaParent and Parents' Press include child raising articles, advertisements for child specific services and for schools, and both include a section, by day of the month and county, on free and low cost activities to do with children. For example, listed in this month's BayAreaParent calendar for today, Monday, November 9, in Alameda, children 6 months to 3 years can participate in Wee Play for $6 from 10am - 1pm, at the Alameda Veteran's Building at 2203 Central Avenue.
An additional resource that all Bay Area parents, particularly those in the East Bay, should be aware of is the Berkeley Parents' Network (BPN). There are several other local parents networks, but none as large and comprehensive as BPN. By registering (free, with name and email address), you receive weekly newsletters on various topics (appropriate to you and the age of your children). These newsletters include announcements of activities and playgroups happening each week. BPN also offers and incredible amount of information (shared by parents) about a huge range of child raising issues, so is a really good resource for parents everywhere, even outside the Bay Area.
I am learning, daily, what my kids like to do and what range of interactive activities there are to do without spending a lot. Look for more articles on this topic in the coming weeks, which could be helpful as the weather gets colder and wetter!
