The pending break up is most often the trigger for violence against women to occur, which may sometimes escalate to murder, or a murder-suicide. The attitude of the perpetrator is often "if I can't have you, no one will."
Dr. Katherine van Wormer, MSSW, Ph.D., the author of the only book in print on murder-suicides, will be interviewed at 6:00 p.m. (PST) on Saturday, December 5, 2009, on the Date Smarter Not Harder Relationships Talk Show on the BlogTalkRadio network by advice columnist, dating coach and show host Deborrah Cooper.
A compelling, comprehensive, insightful and eye-opening book "Death by Domestic Violence" discusses the number one killer of women throughout the world - their intimate partners. Each year approximately 33 percent of all women, and 3 percent of all men who are murdered in the United States are killed by a so-called "intimate," a spouse, partner, or lover. Nationwide, murder by an intimate is the number one cause of death for pregnant women. Not surprisingly, murder by an intimate is not just an American problem. A European task force recently found domestic violence accounts for 25 percent of all homicides in London and 35 percent across England and Wales.
Katherine van Wormer, MSSW, Ph.D., is a Professor of Social Work at the University of Northern Iowa. In her timely book, the author describes this problem and what she has seen and heard on the frontlines from both men and women who have escaped domestic violence that was escalating towards fatal levels.
