It's been a busy month for Arizona Basset Hound Rescue. In the last 30 days, the group has pulled over 52 dogs from three puppy mills in Pinal county - all of them reportedly owned by one person.

“AZBHR has worked with Pinal County for over two years trying to close down the breeder and is very thankful to Pinal County and all their staff for the efforts in getting the owner to surrender the final group of Bassets as of Monday, August 3rd,” said Kim Bruck, Director of Arizona Basset Hound Rescue (AZBHR).

In early February, twenty-nine of the dogs were pulled when the breeder was evicted from her property. She moved to a location down the street, leaving 13 of the bassets on her old property and taking the others with her. Pinal County pursuaded her to relinquish the animals. Twenty-two of those animals were pulled from county by rescue groups while the others were adopted out.

Recently, a realtor inspecting the property discovered the remaining dogs had no food, water or shade and called authorities. The owner claimed that she had been caring for the animals when she could, but was "unable to find a ride over there in the last three days."

Pinal was able to pursuade the woman to surrender the remaining animals, which is just one more reason she probably won't be facing charges.

AZBHR has taken in 16 of the 21 bassets. The remaining dogs are puppies who had parvo and were beyond assistance. All but one had to be euthanized, and the final one is not in good shape. AZBHR is in need of adopters, foster homes and funding to care for their 80+ rescues. "It breaks my heart to know that these dogs that have died from neglect could have been saved if they would have been taken to a vet for care at the early stages.  The dogs depend on us humans to be there for them and care for them," said Bruck.
