Maricopa County Animal Care and Control (MCACC) is in the mist of a CATastrophe. The Westside shelter currently houses 292 felines, well over their average capacity of 100, and max capacity of 150.

The Eastside shelter is faring just as poorly.

"It is critical that we move these cats into loving homes," said Duanne Wilster, Westside Foster Coordinator.

The community’s help is needed. Now is the time to come in and adopt - it may well be the only time in your life when you can actually choose your own family member!

Reduced Adoption Fees: MCACC has some great adoption fees for cats right now. Adult cats are $34, kittens are $50 and the second cat is half-price.

Become a Foster Family: Another option is to become a foster family for all the kittens coming in. It is kitten season and if they are less than 2 pounds, they cannot be adopted. You will only need to keep the kittens until they are weaned or up to weight, and then you can either work through MCACC or a rescue group to cover spay/neuter, vaccination and microchip costs, as well as find the animal a forever home.

Don't Surrender! If you are considering surrendering your cat right now, please hold off. "If they could wait even a week, it would make a big difference," Wilster reports."Any cat coming into the shelter is at risk of being euthanized upon arrival."

Microchips and ID Tags: If you own a cat, make sure (s)he is wearing an ID tag at all times, and get the animal microchipped. This will help ensure that if the cat does get out, (s)he can get back to their owners."
