So what's your secret???

PostSecret: Confessions on Life, Death, and God by Frank Warren

If you are unfamiliar with Frank Warren's concept, I highly encourage you to head on over to the PostSecret blog. The general premise is that people write their secrets on postcards, envelopes, photos, artwork, etc, and mail them to Warren, who then posts some of what he has received on his blog. It's very liberating (I've sent a postcard -- no, it hasn't been published and no, I won't tell you what my secret was).

Warren has released a number of books containing these secrets. There was PostSecret: Extraordinary Confessions from Ordinary Lives, My Secret: A PostSecret Book, Secret Lives of Men and Women: A PostSecret Book, and Lifetime of Secrets: A PostSecret Book. You would think that the secrets would get redundant after a while, but with tidbits like a woman sharing how, on the same day every year, she dances to the same song and pretends to hold the baby she miscarried, or someone else writing on a Reese's peanut butter cup wrapper that he/she faked being allergic to peanuts as a child to get attention and now he/she hasn't had anything with peanuts in it for years, you just never know what will be on the next page.

In his latest release, PostSecrets on Life, Death, and God, Warren shares with us even more interesting and thought-provoking secrets.  "I make you believe that I am a racist so you wouldn't suspect that I had sex with your best friend." (pg. 49) "I check the obituaries everyday hoping my ex-boyfriend is dead." (pg. 59) Okay, I have to admit that I've done that -- wishful thinking... (Again, no, that was not the secret I sent in.) Another one I can totally relate to: "When I cook alone, I always pretend I'm cooking for The Food Network (audience and all)." This one was one of my favorite "funny" ones: "I love going poop because it is like weight loss without exercise." (pg. 128)  If you think your secret is too dark, too embarrassing, or too damaging, just check out the ones people have already submitted -- there's a good chance you're among the norm.

I am one of those people who can keep a secret only if I am allowed to tell just one other person. I'm not strong enough to keep it totally to myself, but I know better than to tell anyone who would be directly related to the issue. When I share someone else's secret, it's always to someone who either doesn't know the subject of the secret or someone who wouldn't care either way. The idea of Frank Warren's PostSecret is perfect -- you can share any deep, dark, funny, depressing, or just interesting bit of information to someone who will never be able to judge you and while even though your secret could be published, your anonimity will never be compromised. So for all of you who are just plagued with horrible secrets or just itching to share juicy information with someone, then head on over to the PostSecret blog and set yourself free! I'd tell you that you could always share it with me, but I already admitted that I can't really keep a secret...
