Hydration is an issue all outdoor enthusiasts are concerned about, especially in the summer months. Over the years, new ways to drink water have been invented as canteens evolved into water bottles, which evolved into hands-free devices such as Camelbaks.

Reusable water bottles have recently made a comeback, despite concerns over certain plastics causing cancer. Metal, plastic and disposable water bottles have saturated the outdoor-recreation market, but do any of them work better and keep people more hydrated?

A study a Pepperdine University found that people drank 24 percent more water when using Camelbak water bottles as compared to disposable plastic bottles. The test took into account bottle design and how it affects water consumption.

According to the study, the Camelbak's valve at the top of the bottle makes all the difference as the bottle is easier to drink from and less likely to spill. Study subjects used four different types of bottles for a two-week period.
