Was Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's garage sale idea successful? Did the garage sale help the State of California make a dent in the budget deficit?
To recap the original story, California's garage sale: Bailing out the state, Governor Schwarzenegger announced that the state of California would hold a two day garage sale to help eliminate surplus and waste. Over 6,000 items were for sale. Approximately 500 motor vehicles were declared surplus by the Governor’s Executive Order and were included in the sale.
The results are in and the State made $1.5 million in total sales. Overall, 477 motor vehicles were sold generating $1,202,800. Various warehouse items sold for $237,000 and $58,000 was generated from EBay sales.
Again, was this successful? For the purpose of eliminating surplus and cleaning out closets, the garage sale was a success. It successfully generated over $1 million but how far will that money actually go and where will it go? The government has not commented on specifics. Californian's and the Nation will be watching.
