Social entrepreneurship uses business principles to solve social issues. I discussed Kiva and ModestNeeds in my article, Spend the Teacher's Money and using pennies to make the world better in my article Pennies for peace.
CleanUp Soap is a company that makes soap and donates 25% of the purchase price to non-profit organizations that help remove land mines and provide assistance to land mine survivors.
How does this relate to my ESL classes? When teaching, these types of companies certainly provide for a conversation class. They also work well for writing classes; have your students write about a cause that is important to them and what type of business would they start to help their cause. My goal, in addition to helping them with their English, is to give them information to think differently, that there are many ways to solve important problems.
"Cleanup is a soap formed in the shape of land mines to raise money for land mine removal and survivor assistance. 25% of the purchase price is donated to nonprofit organizations throughout the world that engage in removing land mines and assisting survivors. As the soap disappears, so do the land mines." - www.cleanupsoap.com
"Cleanup was conceived and designed by Parsons graduate Hideaki Matsui, in 2006. His senior thesis project pairs an innovative design with a non-profit organization to promote their mission.
Hideaki grew up with exposure to images of land mine devastation through photographs his parents displayed. When he was presented with the opportunity to partner with a nonprofit organization for this thesis project, land mines were his first choice." - www.cleanupsoap.com/about_us
